Because, why not?
Actually because my classmates convinced the machine tool company that they should give us a discount if we provided labor. Which would’ve been kinda okay if anyone had any kind of experience... at all... but none of them do.
Don’t worry, Bman76 is here to save your asses the day!
A Cincinnati Milacron Falcon 300 like the one I used, only much cleaner than the one I used.
I grew up around the machine tool industry. My dad has worked as a machine salesman for my whole life, so I’m comfortable in a job shop. I’ve even worked for a machine tool company, however I was in the marketing/advertising department. I can speak the language of machining, but I’ve never actually run a large CNC until today.
Luckily the shop guys were friendly and patient (as usual) and helped me get everything set up.
Fresh threads
Test pieces
The actual parts are 4 and 5 feet long, though only the first 6 inches are threaded.
MG for your time.
TL;DR - I keep acquiring skills because my classmates won’t. Same reason I’m now an AWS certified welder. Their loss, my gain.

Damn. My family all did machining two generations back. Since then they all did engineering. Now I want machine tools!

I know, right? I graduate with my Masters in Architecture in a month, but all I want to do right now is run machines... and sleep.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

Machining is so satisfying.

Yeah. I’m IT managing machines like this, but can’t get any floor time.

Wooden platforms with an internal steel pipe-beam. I have to be able to tension the pipes, thus threading. The 4 foot sections are getting welded to longer pipes, we just didn’t have machining room to turn 10 foot pipes.
Here’s one sans pipes.

Freshly cut parts are literally the best.

We’ve been building a machine shop in the office over the last few years (my boss is a tool and die maker) so I’m super stoked for getting it running. I have a few hours on manual equipment from school but getting access to both manual and CNC gear is going to be so amazing. Good luck building more stuff!

Wait’ll you get to try a 5-axis mill on aluminum.

Having seen that before, I definitely want to.

At my internship at Ford, I sat next to the mills doing the production GT. Nothing better than the hum of the mill and the smell of pig shit I mean clay.

Those same classmates who will go onto engineering positions and tell me (a set-up machinist for nearly 15 years now) how all I do is push a button and why can’t I just be faster/better and I thought the machine spec said you could hold +/- 0.001 no problem, so why is it so hard just do it.

Enjoy, if you get the chance to play with a CNC laser cutter or a water jet take it!

I play with laser cutters (for wood/paper) all the time, I haven’t used a water jet though. I’m also the only one in our studio who can run the CNC plasma cutter.

The paper/wood laser cutters are neat, its the metal ones that are awe inspiring. Some of my former students were able to get competitive robotics parts done on a CNC laser cutter and brake. The finished pieces were amazing.

They’re scary clean, especially when compared to plasma.
